Wethington "I believe In the availability to touch the stuff that we excavate." Relnhardt said. There were no problems with the ancestors of the Inuplats. he added. "The elders come out and wanted to make sure we are being nice with thetr history that we do the excavations and do them well," he said. The expedition was conducted under somewhat harsh conditions.

There was sunlight for 24 hours a day. no running water and temperatures that hovered in the 30s and 40s. "On August 2. we did have a sunset. The sun went down at 2:30 a.m.

and rose again, at. 3." said Jane Blankman. a senior majoring in anthropology. Expedition members also had to keep an eye out for polar bears. "Once at about 3:40 a.m.

I heard something rub against the tent," Relnhardt said. "1 thought, well. It's a bear. I didn't have anything I could do about It so I practiced breath control. I could hear him breathing.

"I thought the best thing to do was to lie still," he said. "But then I became concerned for others and got out of the tent." The bear was gone by the'tlme Associated Press Artifacts recovered during a six-week dig in Alaska this summer will be studied at the University of Indianapolis before being returned, a professor said. Greg Relnhardt. two of his students and a handful of volunteers spent the summer excavating several Inuplat villages. Relnhardt hopes the expedition will uncover what life was like 200 years ago for the Inupiat, a people who lived along the Chukchi Sea in the northern part of the state.

The site also is known for the 32 Yankee whaling ships that were crushed by Ice in 1871. "We don't know exactly why the people lived there. It Is my feeling they were there because of the walruses," said Relnhardt, co-Investigator of the dig along with Glenn W. Sheehan. "Many (walruses) are poached for their tusks.

The natives are allowed to take them, but for subsistence rather than for the tusks." The excavation group also found Intricately carved miniature ivory mittens used as a toggle to pull seal carcasses; hunting weapons; wooden dishes; harpoons; and a seal scratchier. Hunters used the seal scratcher to Imitate the sound of a seal on the Ice surface near a breathing hole so the animals would be lured from the water. Relnhardt brought the artifacts back to Indianapolis, where they will be studied before being returned to Barrow, Alaska. DREAM WEDDING HENRY H. ELSEY, 88.
