Both Rosa and Carmela have been prima donnas at the "Met" for several years. Into music halls they burst forth from Meriden, -Conn. There the family name was Ponsillo. One night at a Lexington avenue hall, a friend of Antonio Scotti heard them. He persuaded the famed barytone to come around the next night.

Within an hour, Scotti arranged an audition with Gatti-Casazza, the metropolitan impresario. Sopranos were needed that year' good ones. So Rosa was given a con-) tract forthwith. Carmela, a mezzo, made her debut two years later. I But there was no rhythmic stepping of the Stone and Dolly sort.

There was, however, a bit of close harmony albeit somewhat different from the "Topsy and Eva" variety. It was the grandeur of the duets from Ponchielli's "La Gioconda," a tragic tale of the inquisition based on Victor Hugo's "Angelo." For sister Rosa, it was her favorite character of Gioconda, the ballad singer. Carmela sang the role of Laura. "All my life," said Carmela, "I've career.
