A multi-million dollar circus empire, which literally grew up in the fields near this Hoosier city at the turn of the century, blossomed for a time, then withered and died.

The circuses which once wintered in the imposing white farm buildings near the Wabash River were dissolved by the late John Ringling after he purchased the five-show American Circus Corporation in 1929. In the next few years, Ringling moved workers, performers, equipment, and animals out of Peru to make the show, which carries his name, "the greatest on earth." A TOUCH of circusdom was reborn at Peru in 1954, however, when the Pipe Creek Animal Farm was formed five miles south of the city on U.S. 31. Here, Paul Kelly, "a circus man himself," developed the former Cole Brothers Circus Winter quarters into a "boarding house" of sorts for show animals. Kelly, who calls Chicago his home, brought with him five elephants; a hippopotamus, and dozens of smaller "cage" animals.

At first he hoped to make the 12-acre farm into a circus museum. "It's a natural," he said when he unloaded his menagerie into the two huge barns on the estate, "moving into an area steeped in circus history." I Nylon at $100 Cotton at 13.9 $ncloMd or send CO D.
