C. SOUNDS LIKE OLD TIMES (Continued from Page 13) Elephant's Rock on the farm. It was on this rock that Ed Hoffman, a trainer with the Wallace Circus, was killed by Charlie, an elephant, in 1901. At rear is the "cat barn." miles from a spot in the Wabash River where "Charlie" one of the elephants in Col. Ben Wallace's show, killed his keeper Ed Hoffman, back in 1901.

Newspaper accounts of the day said Charlie was being watered near the rock, when, for. some reason, the beast turned on Hoffman and beat him to death on the boulder. When Charlie's tragic deed was discovered (newspapers said Charlie was seen probing the water near the rock for Hoffman's body) the elephant was put to death before a squad of high-powered rifles. The rock, minus a plaque describing the event-still is at the farm. The stellar boarder at Kelly's elephant barn is without a doubt "Old Babe." Now pushing 80 years, Kelly estimates, Babe has come back to Peru to die.

After a career of circuses, road shows, and several movles, the tired old animal is now content to stand in her stall, trying to mooch bran from the workers as they pass by. KELLY'S FIVE elephants were purchased from the St. Louis Zoo when he bought the animal farm in 1954. Trained to do a variety of skits, the pachyderm quartetwas one of the biggest drawing cards at the St. Louis Zoo for a decade.

Kelly acquired the animals when zoo officials announced that they were bringing in nine baby elephants and selling the old-timers, which ranged in age from 14 to 27 years. For the past two years, Kelly has been acclimating the foursome to the noise of the world outside their 200 compound. He uses one or more of the elephants in a publicity stunt or act. The quartet is yet to perform in a circus ring. TO HELP pay the feed bill, Kelly has set up a series One section of the farm is a graveyard of circus wagons, once gay, brightly colored.

Hay, bran, vegetables and bread make up the most of the daily food ration. Kelly's War Baby -eats a healthy share of the daily rations, too. The white-haired Kelly describes himself as having more nerve than sense with animals. He grew up in the circus world, traveling first with his father's circus, the Kelly-Norris Show, out of Florida.

He left the circus world for a time to work with a telephone corporation, then held a concession at the Chicago Railroad Fair. "But when my family was reared, I' got back into the business. I guess I felt as if I were missing something." KELLY'S VENTURE hasn't brought back the title of "Circus City" to Peru, but it has kept a spark of that era glowing- era which once saw Peru as the Mecca of the circus world.
