Elaine Lemon, principal of Douglas Public School at Gary, has been appointed vice-chairman of the Indiana campaign of the United Negro College Fund, former Governor Matthew E. Welsh, state chairman of the fund, announced. Miss Lemon will serve with the fund's state board as consultant to alumni of the 33 member colleges benefited by the fund. She holds degrees from Atlanta (Ga.) University, Ball State University and Columbia University and is working on a doctorate in education at Columbia.

She has been on the fund's executive board in Gary, president of the Gary Branch of National Association of College Women and secretary of the executive board of the Urban League. part in a scientific research project. All three men had received parole approval from the State Parole Board and would have left prison life behind them legally within a few weeks. Now they will be returned as escapees. THE THREE were part of a group of 12 prisoners all due to be released on parole soon who had volunteered for the week-long project conducted by the Lilly Laboratory for Clinical Research at General Hospital.

The experiment involved evaluation of certain new Lilly products on motor and mental performances as measured by a battery of tests. The three who escaped into the cold wearing only T-shirts and blue jeans, according to reformatory officials, were: LARRY JOE Cunningham, 22 years old, sentenced in 1966 to 1-10 years for felonious entry in Blackford County; Jackie Lee Leadford, 28, sentenced to 1-10 years from Marion County in 1962 for Cold Cat Gets A Big Charge Hopewell Junction, N.Y. (AP) When Ross C. McCluskey started his car this morning, his cat got quite a charge out of it. McCluskey, postmaster of this Dutchess County community, was on his way to work when the car simply quit working.

Raising the hood, he found one of his cats caught on the engine block. The animal had short-circuited everything. Mechanics freed the cat and it will recover. It evidently had crawled onto the engine to keep warm in the 35 below zero cold here during the night.
