Raymond C. Harwood, former president and chief executive officer of Harper Row, died of a stroke Saturday at Ashevllle Memorial Mission Hospital. He was 81. Harwood, who had retired to Ashevllle in 1975, had been named chairman of the board of the publishing house in 1968. He began his career at Harper Brother In 1930 and became president of the publishing firm In 1955.

He was named president of Harper Row when Harper Brothers merged with Row, Peterson Co. in 1962. Harwood, born In Brooklyn, N.Y.. and a 1926 graduate of New York University, was also chairman of Harper's Magazine Inc. and president of American Book Publishers Council.

Harwood was chairman of the board of the Franklin Book Program and during President Lyndon Johnson's administration he had served on the U.S. Government Advisory Committee on International Book Programs. In 1956, Harwood had been elected treasurer of University Press and became president in 1968. He retired from that post in 1971. Harwood is survived by his wife, Joan Underwood Harwood, and two daughters.

Monday. He died Friday In St. Francis Hospital Center. He had been a crew manager for the Western Electric Co. plant in Indianapolis 29 years, retiring eight years ago.

Vincent Hospital. Family members said she had suffered from a severe cold and was taken to the hospital Friday morning. She started working at The Star In 1954, and her columns have been a regular feature since 1963. Her last On the Air-column appears in today's TV Week section of The Star. Cole Robert E. Cole, 61. Indianapolis, died Saturday In St. Vincent Hospital. Born at West Union, Ohio, he had lived in Indianapolis since 1952.

He was employed by Koschnick Co. eight years. Previously, he was manager of the Lumber Mart at Carmel. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Services will be at 11 a.m.

He had been a tool maker for Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors Corp. 32 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Terre Haute Masonic Lodge.
