Wife and Children. Samuel Richardson's ''Pamela" of 1741 to Ellen Glasgow's "The Romantic Comedians" of 1926. The most difficult to obtain was the 1865 edition of "Alice in Wonderland." Some of the first editions bear penned inscriptions on their fly-leaves. In "The Little Minister," a fine hand has inscribed.

"To Thomas Hardy from J.M. Barrie Oct. '91." THE LILLY exhibit shows the progression of publishing modes over nearly two centuries. Most of the English books of the 19th century were available only in three separately bound volumes, a custom that allowed the publishers to charge higher prices. Among the books seen in three-volume sets are Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and Mulock's "John Halifax, Gentleman." The three-volume practice faded out after 1890 under STAR STATE REPORT Bloomington, Ind.

The only collection of first editions of 100 American and English novels, "The Newton Hundred," is on exhibit at the Lilly Library at Indiana University. 'I he "Newton Hundred" will be in exhibit until mid-December. The books in the list were collected by the late Josiah Kirby Lilly of Indianapolis. SINCE HE WAS fastidious about the conditions of copies he acquired, the books are displayed in virtually their original state, according to Dr. Edward P.

Rich, Lilly Fellow in charge of the exhibition. In 192S the late Alfred Edward Newton, then the "Samuel Johnson of bibliophily" was asked by book collectors the 100 English and American novels he would like most to collect. His list resulted in the Lilly collection. THE BOOKS range from Mrs. Mvrtle Smith, Seeleyville, 9 DAY, Mr.

"Machinery has been established to expedite delivery of new vehicles with all possible speed and new cars and trucks are now arriving or are on their way." Studded Tires Legal In answer to the question if studded snow tires are legal in Indiana, they are. In this state, however, they are limited to a period from Oct.

1 to May 1. In a survey of the use of studded tires, the Hoosier Motor Club says that they are now legal in 42 states and the District of Columbia. They are not legal in Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. The Hoosier Motor Club said that tests show that a car traveling on a glare of ice at 25 degrees requires 151 feet to stop with regular snow tires; 129 feet with studded snow tires on the rear; 123 feet with studded tires front and rear, and 75 feet with reinforced tire chains. "So reinforced tire chains are still the most effective devices for stopping on ice," James Parks, secretary-manager of the Hoosier Motor Club, said.

Higher Prices No one in Detroit will discuss the subject but it is a fair guess that prices of 19CS models may be increased after the first of the year.
