FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1987 -THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- PAGE 49 Public Notices Public Notices Public Notices Public Notices Rabbi claims clergy not trained to help bereaved deal with grief By CAROL ELROD STAR RELIGION WRITER Ministers and rabbis may be of no help to the family when a loved one dies. Many men and women entered the seminary in the first place because they couldn't deal with death, and their classes didn't prepare them to do so, Rabbi Earl A. Grollman, an expert on the role of the clergy in death and dying, said Thursday. Although hand-holding is more helpful than theology when someone dies, many clergy say a prayer and then leave as quickly as they can, said Rabbi Grollman. who lectures widely and has written 15 books, most of which focus on death.

"It's easier to become involved in theology" than to listen to the bereaved, to help them express their feelings and to share their sorrow, said the rabbi. Rabbi Grollman. the spiritual leader of a synagogue in Belmont, for more than 30 years, is a member of the bereavement team of the Community School of Psychiatry at Harvard University and of the advisory board for the Foundation of Thanatology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. He was in Indianapolis Thursday for addresses sponsored by the Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis and Flanner Buchanan Mortuaries. To be most helpful, clergy should let the bereaved know they aren't crazy for reacting to a loved one's death with what may seem like strange behaviors sleep problems, intense guilt, anger or inability to concentrate, said the rabbi in an interview prior to his talks.

"Grief is love not wanting to let go" and is normal, he said. "You (a clergyman) can't take away pain." Too often, he said, clergy try to console family members by telling them the dead person is in a better world. Even if that is true, "it still hurts to say goodbye in this world," he said. No one should try to orchestrate grief, to tell people what they ought to feel and how they ought to behave, the rabbi noted. Each person reacts differently.

Rabbi Grollman said he did not attend a funeral until he became a rabbi. "I went six years to seminary and never had a discussion of death," he said. "My closest friend died and I didn't know what to say to his children." Avoiding the subject of death is common not only in seminaries, but in medical and nursing schools as well, he said. The rabbi believes good mental health requires learning to live with tragedy. That goes for children as well as adults.

It's not realistic to live otherwise, he said. Goren On Bridge By CHARLES II. GOREN and OMAR SHARIF vulnerable. South North-South deals. According to court documents, Janey S. Abner. 30, Far-mington Hills, was a weekend guest in August at the Westside home of Lisa George, wife of the vice president of the Hulman Foundation. Mrs. George showed Miss Abner a "6-carat multifaceted solitaire diamond mounted in a white gold band with three smaller diamonds mounted on either side of the larger stone," a court document said.

Mrs. George also showed her the secret place she kept the ring. Miss Abner left the George residence that evening. Shortly afterward, Mrs. George discovered the ring missing.

Miss Abner was the only one who had access to the ring and nothing else was missing, according to a sworn affidavit filed by Marion County Sheriff's Lt. George B. Hughes. The ring has not been recovered. Charges were filed Tuesday in Marion Superior Court, Criminal Division, Room 2.

a spade, and the finesse of the queen lost to the king. After that inauspicious start, it was a moral certainty that declarer would misguess in trumps and end up losing two trump tricks and a spade. Declarer was unfortunate in finding everything wrong, yet he had only himself to blame for failing to make the contract. If he could avoid losing a spade trick, he could have afforded to concede two tricks in trumps, and his line of play should have been based on keeping West off lead. After winning the ace of hearts, declarer should have come to hand with a heart ruff and led a trump to the ten.

Let's consider the worst scenario, where that loses to the jack. East is on lead, and nothing he can do harms declarer. Declarer simply wins any return and forces out the ace of diamonds. Now, when West shifts to a spade declarer can rise with the ace, draw a trump if necessary, then discard the table's two losing spades on high clubs. Declarer will end up losing only two trump tricks and the contract will be home.

On the actual lie of the cards, this line produces an overtrick. Available for a limited time as a special offer is a two-for-one package of Doubles booklets. For your copies send $3 to "Goren Doubles, in care of The Indianapolis Star, P.O. Box 4426, Orlando, Fla. 32802-4426.

If you look at the position more closely, however, you will find his technique was at fault. When South showed an unbalanced hand. North realized there was a possibility his side would have only one heart stopper, so he judged that the hand 1 would play better in the minor suit game.
