C10 THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1999 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR Obituaries William H. Iipkey promoted races at Kokomo Speedway for decades John Meek, ex-deputy sheriff, was twice cited for bravery nn Jan. 8. 1956. Sherwood Blue, 93 served 3 terms as prosecutor in 940s high school with Mr.

Meek, and the two men Joined the Sheriffs Department the same year. "He was a remarkable man," Cooper said. "After his accident, we had a fundraiser at the FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) and bought him a racing chair. He Just shook It (the accident) off and went chair racing. He met every task, and it started when he was a kid growing up poor." Mr.

Meek was a 1982 graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va. During two combat tours in Vietnam, where he served with the U.S. Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams, now known as the Navy SEALs, Mr. Meek was awarded 20 ribbons and medals, including the Purple Heart. Mr.

Meek was featured in a full-page article in The Indianapolis News in 1989. In spite of injuries that left him paralyzed from the chest down, Mr. Meek entered a rigorous, self-imposed training schedule and set a goal to complete a major marathon, "No matter how low you get, you can come back," he said in the newspaper article. After he won several short-distance wheelchair races, he entered the 13.1-mile 500 Mini-Marathon race in 1989 and completed it in 3 hours and 26 minutes. He was a member of Fraternal of Police Lodge 86, Mystic Circle Masonic Lodge and First Baptist Church of Cumberland.

Mr. Meek was also a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Wanamaker Post. Memorial contributions may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Indiana. Survivors: wife Cynthia L. Swick Meek; half brother Kelley Pace; half sister Jalna Lacy.

Mr. Meek was twice named Deputy of the Year for John G. Meek bravery. He joined the Sheriffs Department In 1969 and retired in 1985 with the rank of lieutenant after he was paralyzed In an automobile accident. Mr.

Meek won Deputy of the Year citation In 1981 for his effort in capturing a man who had barricaded himself in an apartment and was shooting randomly at police and civilians, He risked his life by dodging shots fired at him as he ran to toss a tear gas canister into the dwelling, forcing the gunman outside. Greg Garrison, a Marlon County deputy prosecutor at the scene, called it one of the most courageous acts he had ever seen by an officer. Mr. Meek won the award again in 1983 after he climbed to the top of a 125-foot tower at the Marion County Home at Julietta and rescued an elderly man who was threatening to jump. For that act of bravery, Mr.

Meek also received an American Red Cross Award. He was named the department's Outstanding Deputy In 1978, 1980 and 1982. Sheriffs Col. Jerry Cooper attended MICHAEL D. GRAHAM, 45, Indian apolis, died Feb.

Sherwood Blue, 93, retired lawyer, died Feb Mr. Blue was a Indianapolis, 17. partner In Blue and Roberts for 27 years, retiring tn 1992. Previously, he owned a private practice and was a partner in Blue and Haupt. He started practicing law tn 1930 at Pickens, Davidson, Gause Pickens.

Mr. Blue was Sherwood Blue elected Marion County prosecutor in 1940 and served three terms. He was a trustee for the Alex Kran-nert Charitable Trust, Russak Trust and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. Mr. Blue was a member of the American Bar, Indiana Bar, Illinois Bar and Indianapolis Bar associations.

A life member and past director of the board of United States Auto Club, he promoted one of its first race, an indoor event at the Fort Wayne Coliseum LINDA S. FARR MOORE, 59, Fort Wayne, formerly of Indianapolis, died Feb. 15. She worked 23 years in the patient administration office of Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne.
