FOOTBALL Spellman is interviewed, released Troubled Chicago Bear Alonzo Spellman has been interviewed by police and released after a scuffle with security guards at a downtown Detroit hotel. The 6-4, 292-pound Spellman was checking into the Westin Hotel on Tuesday night when two women accompanying him began fighting, police said.

They said one woman stabbed the other, and Spellman got between them before five security officers tried to subdue him. "The guards tried to break it up, but at this pofnt he became so combative and irate he tried to attack the guards," police Cmdr. Sidney Bogan told the Detroit Free Press. "It was definitely a brawl." Police were still investigating Thursday afternoon' and had made no decision on seeking charges, Officer Allene Ray said. AUTO RACING Texas speedway has a new look Texas Motor Speedway is "smooth, smooth, smooth," after being improved to resolve drivers' complaints, general manager Eddie Gossage said Thursday.

The track spent between $2 million and 83 million to improve drainage, increase banking on two turns and resurface the entire 1.5-mile oval with a finer aggregate asphalt, Gossage said. Drivers complained after last month's NASCAR Texas 500 that turn four was too tight. Water seeping through the asphalt changed the first turn into a giant puddle. "It's a completely different racetrack, but that's me in my layman's opinion," Gossage said. "It will be up to the drivers to decide."
