EPA Crews Called Back To Seymour Waste Site STAR SOUTHERN INDIANA BUREAU Seymour, Ind.

A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emergency crew is working again at the Seymour Recycling Co. site to contain about 3,000 gallons of toxic chemicals leaking from an acid tank. The crew moved in late Wednesday after tests by the State Board of Health confirmed a new leak in rusting tanks at the bankrupt chemical recycling company near here. AN EPA SPOKESMAN said a gallon tank has lost about 3,000 gallons of mixed chemical wastes including toxic heavy metals chromium and copper.

The heavy metals presented a special threat at the site because a carbon filtration system and lagoons set up in a previous $860,000 EPA containment effort would be unable to prevent the chemicals from entering the city sewage system. The carbon system was intended to filter other types of dangerous chemicals illegally stored at the 13-acre site. The contents of the lagoons and liquids spilled on the ground are being packaged in 55-gallon drums and kept at the site for later disposal with the 60,000 other similar drums there. A FEDERALLY-FUNDED report released last week said about a million gallons of mixed acids and unidentified chemicals are stored in old railroad cars and similar bulk tanks. It was one of those tanks which began to leak, according to the spokesman.

The new work is expected to be completed by Saturday.
