Ends on 761stBallot EX CONGRESSMAN QUITS RACE Executes Strategic Move to Pre vent Bolting and Bring About Harmony BY A STA CORRESPONDENT ANDERSON Ind March 27 After nominating Nathan Hawkins of Port land state senator from Jay and Ran dolph Counties on the 761st ballot after a deadlock lasting for 713 ballots and ex tending over twenty two hours time the Eighth District Republican convention came to a close at noon today ending the most stubborn fight to nominate a con gressman that the Republicans of the dis trict have ever had With the nomina tion of Senator Hawkins all of the othercandidates pledged him their unqualified support and the convention adjourned amid thunderous cheering and predictions that with a united effort the Republicans would elect Hawkins next November Hawkins's nomination came about when George Cromer of Muncie seeing that would be impossible for him to break either the Madison Jay or Randolph coun ity delegations and thus gain the nomina tion himself gave his support to Hawkins Cromer's action had been expected for several hours but the way in which he his strength to Hawkins withoutCausing a rush in some other directionand without splitting the Madison Coun ty delegation at all was a strategic move orced to Leave Theater i rz 7 'X fells' Jr The balloting had proceeded stubbornly and steadily throughout the night and forenoon of today every motion to ad journ caucus or take a recess being howled down Shortly after 6 o'clock this morning the convention was forced to leave the Grand Opera House Manager Hennings calling for possession in order that way might be made for a theatrical STATE SENATOR NATHAN HAWKINS ANDERSON Ind March State Senator Nathan 13 Hawkins of Portland WM Dftiubiated by the Rejjublican ron vRtbfton Kir Congress on the seven hun dred and sixty first ballot at 1 1:50 today Mr Hawkins won the Eighth I)is trict light ex Congrcssman George VV Cromer had given up the contest company The delegates marched up the Street shouting and carry their banners to the Bijou Theater where the conven tion reconvened The walk in the morn ing air revived the sleepy delegates and by the time they reached the hall they were more determined and noisy than ever The delegates were worn out again by 10 Is all that steam that was popping off asked Chair man rysinger who was still sticking to the chair Immediately there was thun derous cheering for the candidates and enthusiasm appeared to be as high as in the beginning The Madison County delegation set upft banner containing the motto When the Madison vote was calledthe chairman of the delegation shouted and pointed to the sign When the 612th ballot came there werecheers because the convention had out stripped the recent Eleventh District con tention at Marion in the number of ballots By 10:45 o'clock the theater bal cony and the rear of the hall were filled with Vestal who cheered con tinually for him District Chairman Newcomer and ex Postmaster inch of Elwood spent two conferring with Cromer men in the 'Madison delegation in an effort to getthem to flock to banner and end the deadlock They held to the unit irule however refusing to leave Vestal'until he released them Vestal appeared among his delgates several times urgingthem to stand by him At 11 word spread that Cromerhad failed again to break Madison Coun and seeing that he could not be rmm ilnated himself was preparing to throw ahis strength to Hawkins The move camer on the 760 ballot Chairman William Aspy of the Adams County delegation announced the seven votes for Cromer Wells Aty was then called said Ashy County wishes to change her vote to seven for The Madison County delegates saw the move and demanded recognition from (he chair It was assorted by various Madi son delegates tlict Adams Cbunty could not change her vole under the rules as It had been repeated by the secretary of the convention Herbert Maddv of Munch The point was not sustained It being shown that the vole had not been re peated by tlie secretary The 760th ballot stood: Cromer 36: Vestal 32: Shoekm 25 and Hawkins 22 On the 761st ballot Adams gave Hawkins 7 Wells County withdrew 5 from Cromer in favor nt Hawkins and gave the other 5 for Shoekney as before Jay County again voted 15 tor Hawkins Delaware County threw all its 31 votes La Hawkins amid thunderous cheers for the Jay County man Randolph County voted its 20 again for Shoekney Before Madi son County's vote was called It was seen that Hawkins had 58 just enough to nominate him Vestal then instructed his delegation to vote for Hawkins and Madi son County cast 32 in the latter's favor Vestal made the nomination unanimous With Madison County's 32 votes Hawkins had 90 and Shoekney 25 on the 761st ballot The manner In which Cromer's strength was thrown to Hawkins without endan gering him gave Madison nothing to fight for and saved a break In the Madison Cmmtv delegation thus protect ing the interests in Madison County Cheer ollows Nomination Immediately niter Hawkins was de claied the nmnim Cromer and tlm other candidates applauding there was a groat demonstration The delegates mounted their seats cheering Not Sprung Talk of a fizzled oist this morning the Jay Delaware and Madison County delegations still refusing abso lutely to hear to any such proposition The name of rx Governor Durbin continued tn he mentioned in connection with the nomination however At one time Mr Durbin after a conference with Cromer proposed to Hawkins and others of the candidates that the deadlock bp broken by the appointment of a commit tee to select the nominee Hawkins and the other candidates refused to consider the proposition Hawkins Is a close friend of Cromer and was second choice In Dolaw'aro Madison Wells Adams and Randolph Counties Carroll McCullough of Anderson de feated Democratic candidate for Governor addressed the convention during the dead lock this morning declaring that ibe con vention was welcome to remain In Ander son nil week if It chose Hawkins and Cromer luid enough votes between them to nominate Cromer but Hawkins would not withdraw The Haw kins men represented that the largo vote Cromer had received In the convention vindicated him and therefore he should withdraw Cromer however held out until he found it was hopeless saying that he was After bath vindication and the nomination KUHN NAME TICKET Expect to Poll Large Vote In Henry County NEWCASTLE Ind March 27 Confi dent that this year promises more than any recent year and especially a larger vote In Henry County than the party has ever polled the Prohibitionists of the county have named a full county ticket a full delegation to the state convention and a candidate for the Legislature The candidate who will oppose Levi I'lrlelp Republican and tho Domocatlc candidate yet to bo selected for representative frum Henry County in the Legislature is Woodward a well known citizen of Knlffhtstows JURY REES HARROD ACQUITS HIM MURDER Station Agent Who Killed McClain Thinking Him Robber Not Guilty CRA ORDSVILLE Ind March After an all night session the jury today returned a sealed verdict acquitting George Harrod a Big our telegraph op erator in this ity of the charge of mur dering Harry McClain of Clinton Ind On the first ballot the vote stood seven for conviction ami five fur acquittal and It required twciity slx ballots to reach an agi eemunt When tho verdict was read at 9 o'clock this morning the crowd that filled the courtroom broke into applause Harrod himself waved tor silence and then made a short speech thanking the jurors and his' friends in the courtroom for their good will Harrod was charged with murder in the first degree On lh night of Nov 27 1907 Im shot and killed Harry McClain at the Big our Station In this city Less than a week betore Harrod had been held up at the station by a masked robber who compelled him to turn over the con tents of the money drawer The robber then compelled Harrod to remain quiet while he made his escape Mistaken for Robber When McClain showed up at the sta tion a few nights Inter Harrod asked Mc Clain whom he did not know what he wanted Tim latter made no response Harrod at once arose from his desk and wnlkeu to the ticket window a few feet awav behind which McClain was stand ing Uh had bls revolver in his hand As he neared the window McClain made a nmve as though reaching for his re volver Quick as a flash Harrod fired through the window glass the bullet striking McClain in tlie neck and swur iu2 the jugular vein The wounded man turned and staggered nut through the front door of the station Harrod lollowed him calling to him to halt This McClain did not do and Hur rod fired two more bullets in quick suc cession both of which look effect Mc Clain foil at the edge of the platform and expired five minutes later A dollar was found clasped between the fingers of the dead man and to nil ap pearances he had come to the station to purchase a ticket An aunt Mrs Albert Yount of this city testified that he had left her homo following a visit that even ing stating that lie was going to his home In Terre Haute NAMING SCALE COMMITTEE ONLY ACTION MINERS Delegates to Convention at Terre Haute Applaud When Telegram Telling of Settlement Is Read TERRE HAUTE Ind March Little other than the appointment of a cale committee resulted from the first session of tho bituminous coal minors wno met in convention at Germania Hall today to consider a new wage contract with tlie operators The scale committee held one session this afternoon and Is scheduled to report when the convention reassembles at 10 tomorrow morn ing but members of the committee say tonight that it will be impossible fur them to have a report ready by that hour The committee is composed of the executive hoard of the district and five delegates selected by Van Horn Reading of a telegram received by ITesident Vim Horn bearing the Informa tion that District No 2 of Pennsylvania has reached a settlement by renewing the present scale was tlie occasion of consid erable applause among the delegates The joint conference with the operators will be held Monday morning CO RESPONDENT IS MISSING Hat ound on Bank of Salt Creek Strengthens Suicide Theory BEDORD Ind March Joseph Kapshnw aged 27 of Oolitic is missing At the last term of court he was named as co respondent In a divorce case tho divorce granted on the allegation Since then Kapshaw has threatened sui cide and this morning his hat was found on the bank of Salt Creek He has been missing since Monday BLIND grand jury today returned an Indictment charg ing George Emory Cassel with first de gree murder after a four session devoted exclusively to studying circum stances and conditions surrounding tho mysterious murder of Thomas Mills The jury examined thirty five witnesses most of them from Owen Morgan and Marlon counties Prosecutor Moss and Special Deputy Prosecutor KIvett of Martinsville had charge of the Investigation The Indictment returned Is probably the same as the verdict of Coroner Cheno weth The action of tho grand Jury was reported to the court this afternoon but a time for trial has not yet been agreed upon There are but two weeks left In the present term of court and it Is prob able that the trial will be postponed until the June term which opens June 6 Wants 160 Witnesses Attorney Hickom for the defense staled this evening that in view of the fact that there would be at leant 150 wit nesses summoned in the trial it would be almost Impossible for him to get the case in shape to be tried this term Both the prosecution and defense were anxious to hold the trial this term if it was found possible It will be remembered that Thomas Mills and Emory Cassel started to Mill Grove one day early in eb ruary that Mills was killed Ln a mysteri ous manner and Cassel was supposed to be seriously wounded Mills had quite a sum of money with him and part of this money was missing after 1he crime Cas sel was arrested suspected of being the slayer and was confined In the Marion County Jail until last week when he was brought tn Spencer to await the ac tion of the grand jury BIG 111 to Evans ville a distance of about thirty miles is negotiating with the Southern Railroad for the use of its bridge over the Wabash River at Mt Carmel and about three miles of track this side of the river This effort to make a traffic arrangement with the Southern has led to repeated rumors that the EUg our or New York Central was trying to buy the St Louis Loulsvllle division of the Southern The Big new route will reach a portion of Gibson and Vanderburg Coun ty heretofore Isolated from a railroad The Intention Is to establish a direct route from Evansville through Mt Carmel to Danville III thence over the Indiana Harbor line into Chicago a route which It is said is a few miles shorter than the most direct route at present in operation between Evansville and Chicago YOUNG BENEDICT
