"4X J7 i THE INDIANAPOLIS MORNING STAR MONDAY JUDY 16 1906 tr ATTEMPT 0 CASINOS BLACKMAILERS' DEED Real acts in Effort to Dynamite Gambling Resorts Are Brought to Light TRIBUTE SOUGHT BALLARD Interest Awaits Judge Decision Which Is Due Today BY LOUIS LUDLOW RENCH LICK Ind July The real facts as to the recent efforts to blow up the casinos at rench Lick and West Baden have come to light in connection with the crusade to eradicate gambling from the rench Lick Valley About two months ago an effort was made to dynamite the rench Lick ca sino and two weeks later a similar at tempt was' made at the West Baden gambling resort It was heralded all over the country that public opinion had be come aroused and that an outraged pub lic sentiment was finding vent in trying to wreck the gaming places The fact is however that the midnight attempts to demolish these two casinos the work of a Chicago concern which makes a business of levying tribute on boss gamblers Ed Ballard who operates the casinos at rench lack and West Baden was selected as a shining mark A threatening letter was sent to him In which a demand was made for $10 a day The letter stated that unless the money was forthcoming his Orange County gambling place would be destroyed Bal lard paid nb attention to this letter and it was followed by others inally by way of emphasizing their demand the holdup men had several sticks of dyna mite laid on the steps of resi dence Still he refused to yield to theirimportunities and then followed the un successful attempts to blow up the two buildings Ballard has the letters from the black mailing concern still in his possession and recently he showed them to some of his close friends In the rench Lick Valley The State in securing the dismantling of the two casinos has done what could not he accomplished by the use of dynamite Ballard stated to his friends to whom he showed the letters that there are several concerns in the country that make ittheir business to levy tribute on gam blers Attorney General Miller Deputy At torney General Hadley and other emis saries of the State spent a quiet Sunday at the Colonial Hotel which is about mid way between rench Lick and West Baden The State officials have not visited the rench Lick and West Baden hotels except on business Decision Today 1 Tt is probable that there will be a large audience in court at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning when Judge Buskirk will hand down his decision in the cases of the State to forfeit the charters of the rench Lick and West Baden Hotel Companies If the judge sustains the demurrer filed by Mr attorneys the proceed ings in the Orange Circuit Court will end and the State will take an appeal to the Supreme Court If the demurrer is over ruled testimony will be taken on the ques tion of the appointment of temporary re ceivers and the issuance of temporary re orders pending a final hearing The evidence will enter fully into the sub ject of gambling at rench Lick and West Baden The witnesses for both sides will be in court tomorrow morning ready to take the stand in case the demurrer is overruled The belief Is general here that the judge will sustain the demurrer His decision will be carefully prepared and in writirfg The political effect of the anti gambling crusade is a cause of much speculation Republicans generally derive a great deal of comfort from it Prior to the gambling exposes the Democratic leaders had placed much dependence on "a thorough as their chief State is sue It had been arranged to sound the slogan all over the State for a cleaning out of the State House Now the Repub licans have turned the tables and are pointing out that no party on earth needs a housecleaning more than the one whose leader is the sponsor fora The Republicans also are making much of the fact that John Kern twice candi date for Governor on the Democratic ticket and Milton Hnttel Democratic nominee for Appellate judge in the pres ent campaign are attorneys for the de fense in the gambling suits This they insist adds to the bad record of the Dem ocrats on the housecleaning question In brief the Republicans feel that all of ths wind has been taken out of the Democrat ic sails on the housecleajiing issuer HEARST ATTACK CONTINUES Taggart Pictured as Red Devil In Chicago Am'eflcan The attack ofWJHiam Randolph Hearst on National Chairman Taggart continued yesterday in Hearst's Chicago American under headlines which proclaimed Tag gart as Than Mur The attack was directed toward fastening the responsibility for gambling at rench Lick upon the national chair man by means of the trademark used it is said on the rench Lick poker chips A cartoon depicts Taggart in a characteristic attitude as national chair man and in another pose as The American says: Taggart is defending with the greatest legal talent he can employ in In diana the Little Red Devil a copyrighted trade mark which appears on all the para phernalia used in this the biggest and most notorious gambling resort in America Little Red Devil is a precious trademark The United States Govern ment at Washington enjoins all other persons from using the imp as a trade symbol Taggart himself owns that trade mark or a fee he gave the Patent Office he is sole proprietor of that patent Taggart could sue and recover damages were that Little Red Devil to go on an goods Devil Everywhere Little Red Devil is on the sta tionery used by his hotel Guests staying at his place write letters with the trade I mark attached It is on the envelopes It is used on the hotel linen It is stamped on the rench Lick cutlery No article of furniture at rench Lick gam bling house is free from the devilish pic ture sees it on cases of his Pluto wa ter that are shipped from that gambling den The Little Red Devil like New Little Black Man is responsible for all of his advertising Taggart was seized with the idea that the Little Red Devil was the very thing for him in the matter of a trade mark so soon as he had set eyes on it That was two years ago while associated with August Belmont the king of gamblers in the East in the effort to make Parker President of the United States Parker have won Taggart doubt less would have claimed that it was the spirit of the Little Red Devil The Lit tle Red Devil according to Taggart typi fies luck is a symbol of Americanism stands for health is a magic wand that brings fortunes Little Red Devil stood for Tag gart so long as Taggart ran the foulest of gambling dens without molestation He had the picture painted on nil the ivory and celluloid used by his sub gamblers They clicked in impish delight when the unwary tried to beat his game They rattled as if in laughter when broken and robbed the poor human devils induced by Taggart's to play his games went away with bowed heads and flushed faces owns the Little Red Devil Yet he says he knows nothing about the gambling games that they were inn in dependently of him that he was not a party to any of the profits that his hotel and the gambling swindles were two sep arate and distinct institutions is what he is fighting for now: to try and convince the courts that such a flimsy transparent story is really TAGGART MEETS AIRBANKS Spends Day at Home City and Holds Con ference With Party Leaders Thomas Taggart chairman of the Dem cratlc national committee was in Indi anapolis yesterday and held a short con ference with Chairman and Secretary Joe Reilly of the Democratic State committee The greater part of the day Mr Taggart spent with Crawford airbanks It is said that the consultation' with Mr airbanks concerning the rench Lick situation was the real purpose of the visit to Indianapolis and that the meet ing with Messrs O'Brien and Reilly was merely incidental Mr Taggart was not communicative either as to the matters at rench Lick or the Hearst attack which was continued against him with renewed vigor yester day is nothing new at rench said Mr Taggart are merely await ing the decision of the judges which will be given tomorrow When this Is an nounce we will know where we are and what to do next if it is necessary to do Mr smile was a minus quan tity until the Hearst tirade was men tioned Then It became expressive as only that particular smile can Still Mr Taggart would only remark that he had nothing to say about the matter He expressed himself as well satisfied with the result of the county convention of Saturday Mr Taggart left for rench Lick on the 4 o'clock train HEAVY YIELD WHEAT NOBLESVILLE Ind July 15 rank Shyrock living
