afternoon Sec Wilson requested Mr presence at a conference at Washing ton this morning and asked also for the postponement of the strike order until after the conference Mr Lewis wired the secretary yesterday that he would be unable to arrive in Washing ton at the time set but would be at his office nt the same hAiir riday morning Thomas Brewster presi dent of the Coal Associa tion was invited to the conference by Secretary Wilson to represent the op erators The strike order was issued accord ing to Mr Lewis because instructions to international officials from the inter national convention at Cleveland re garding the calling of a general strike left no alternative The convention passed a resolution recommending that in the event a satisfactory wage agree ment to replace the present agreement was not secured for the central competi tive field before Nov 1 a general strike of all bituminous workers and mine workers throughout the United States be called on that date Take No Stock in Meeting Mr Lewis said that the mine workers are proceeding on the assumption that nothing would come out of the Wash ington conference and that the only thing that can prevent a strike will be an agreement reached by the opera and the representatives before Nov 1 Even in die case that such an agreement should result from the Washington conference he said it would not become binding until it had been acted upon at axeconvened session of the international convention which was held at Cleveland a few weeks ago lewis would make no statement re garding the probable outcome of the conference
