"We didn't have baseball facilities in high school, but my older brother pushed me Into playing amateur ball. He used to make me catch him when I was just a kid and was responsible for me going to the tryout camp where the Reds signed me." He reported to spring training in 1970, presumably as a catcher, but after one day it was determined that he was grossly miscast and was schooled in first-basing. i (Si as a professional.

But the re-; cords show that Griffey was an all-state end and. to win that kind of honor In Pennsylvania, you must be a pretty good football player. Griffey started his baseball career at Bradenton, in 1969 and batted .281 for 49 games. He was at Sioux Falls in 1970, batting .244 and then came his good year at Tampa where he was hitting .341 in 88 games before being promoted to Three Rivers. In the Canadian city last year, Ken batted .318, stole 31 bases and was named, along with Dries-sen, to the Eastern League All-Star team.

"I got off to a good start last year, but never expected that to happen against the better pitching in this league this year," commented Griffey. i Griffey has tremendous By LESTER KOELLING Electrifying performances at Bush Stadium and on the road have become a trademark of two Indianapolis Indians rookies, infielder Dan Driessen and outfielder Ken Griffey. Both are left-handed batters in their first competition at the Triple A level. Both have speed and both can hit and each has been doing plenty of both. Driessen, normally a first baseman but playing third base for the Indians, is hitting at a hefty .417 clip and Griffey at .350.

Driessen has 34 runs-batted-in, second high in the American Association, and Griffey 17. Each has three homers, and Griffey has accumulated 12 stolen bases. Both were at Three Rivers in the Class AA Eastern League last year where Dries-sen batted .322 to miss the batting championship by one point, and Griffey .318. They were both at Tampa in 1971 where Driessen batted .327 and Griffey .341, missing the batting title because of insufficient plate appearances. Curiously, both came into the Cincinnati organisation almost by chance.

He was promoted to Three Rivers in 1972 and led the Florida state League in doubles with 37. "I never dreamed I would get off to a start like this," said Driessen of his lofty batting mark. "I thought it would be more like last year (when he was hitting .240 for the first two months before going into a 19-for-22 binge)." Griffey, 23 and married with two children, was born in Donora, the home town of Hall of Famer Stan Musial.

He still lives in Donora, which is near Pittsburph, and has an autographed ball by Musial stolen with no baseball background except for weekend amateur competition, was plucked out of a tryout camp in 1989. Griffey was a 29 selection in the 1969 summer free agent draft after playing high school ball in Pennsylvania. Driessen, 22 and single, was born in Hilton Head, S.C., where he still lives.
