30, 1991 ex-Mitchell mayor BEDFORD, Ind. Services for James A. Fortner, 64, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with calling until 8 tonight. Mr.

Fortner, former mayor of Mitchell, died Monday. He served as mayor at Mitchell from 1964 through 1967. He been a construction worker and had retired as maintenance supervisor from Bedford Medical Center. Mr. Fortner was a member of American Legion and Bedford Boat Club.

He was the widower of Delores Herod. Survivors son Kipp Fortner; brothers John, Robert, Ron, Denny, Larry, Jerry Fortner; sister Marilyn Blackburn; two grandchildren. lolean O. Shepherd Services for lolean Odessa Shepherd, 72, Indianapolis, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Summers Northeast Funeral Home, with calling from 10 a.m.

to services. Miss Shepherd, who died Sunday in MidWest Medical Center, worked in the cafeteria of J. C. Penney retiring in 1981. She was a member of SS.

Peter Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be jn New Crown Cemetery. John A. Valente John A. Valente, 69, Indianapolis, died Tuesday at his home.

Mr. Valente was a mechanical engineer for Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors Corp. 35 years, retiring in 1980. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the church's building fund.

Mrs. Coleman was a self-employed child care provider. She was a member of Good Samaritan Baptist Church where she was past president of the Senior and Chancel choirs and Pastor's Aid and was a member of the Deaconess and Trustee boards. She was a member of the Southside Women's Club, Southside Florist Club and Household of Ruth. Services will be at 1 p.m.

Harold Garrett Harold Garrett, 61, Indianapolis, died Monday in Methodist Hospital. Mr. Garrett worked in the engineering department of Central State Hospital 18 years, retiring in 1989.

He was a Navy veteran and was a member of Light of the World Christian Church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the church, with calling there from 11 a.m. to services. Stuart Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Robert F. Cox CARMEL, Ind. Services for Robert Ford Cox, 67, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. There will be no calling.

Smith Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Cox, who died Tuesday at Forest Park Health Care, Kokomo, was an aviator 28 years with the Navy, serving in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired in 1969. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi.

Suzanne Thurston SHELBYVILLE, Ind. Memorial services for Suzanne DePrez Thurston, 68, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home with calling until 8 tonight. Mrs. Thurston died Monday.

A 1944 graduate of Holyoke College, she served on the board of directors of Shelby County Library Foundation and Forest Hill Cemetery Association. She had been a docent at Indianapolis Museum of Art and was a member of the Child Protection Team and Catherine Merrill Circle. Memorial contributions may be made to the library. Widening the Maumee River to reduce flooding in Fort Wayne is proceeding toward completion next spring after overcoming numerous obstacles, supporters say. The S8.7 million project to excavate pinch points that reduce the flood-prone river's flow will lower the level of the Maumee about 1 foot at the point where it's formed by the confluence of the St. Joseph and St. Mary's rivers. Allen County Surveyor Louis Machlan said removal of 1.14 million cubic yards of dirt from a 4-mile stretch of the north bank and the building of an auxiliary channel to handle overflow will be completed by Nov.

15. "Since the beginning, we've had to fight a long, hard battle to get to this point," Machlan said. In the nine years since first proposed, the project had to overcome opposition by environmentalists and reviews by U.S. Fish Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers and other agencies before work began in February. Friday. Mr. Campbell, an attorney, died today. He had been the senior partner in the law firm of Campbell, Kyle Proffitt for the past 30 years. He was twice elected Hamilton County prosecutor.

Mr. Campbell was president of the Indiana State Bar Association in 1981 and 1982 after serving as chairman of the bar's house of delegates. He was a member of Hamilton County and American bar associations and was fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He helped organize the Nobles-ville Boys and Girls Club, Hamilton County Theater Guild and 50 Club of Hamilton County. A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of church, Elks Lodge, Chamber of Commerce, Masonic Lodge and several veterans organizations.

Mrs. Canterbury died Monday. A 1933 Ball State Teachers College graduate, she had been a substitute teacher in the Anderson Schools. She served two terms on the Anderson School Board. She was a member of Central Christian Church and Sigma Alpha Chi Sorority.

Sunday in St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Mr. Chandler, who died Monday, was assistant superintendent of Wayne Township Schools 18 years, retiring in 1982. A school band director, he led bands at Lawrenceburg, Elnora and Oakland City before coming to Ben Davis High School in 1953.

During his 11 years at Ben Davis, the band received state and national recognition and participated in the annual Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl parades and President John F. Ken-, nedy's inauguration parade. Upon his retirement, he was named director emeritus in recognition of his service to the band and the Ben Davis community. Mr. Chandler was executive secretary of the Indiana School Music Association from 1955 to 1980.

Phi Beta Mu, the national bandmasters Nina H. Johnson Nina Hazel Johnson, 76, Indianapolis, died Tuesday at her home. Mrs. Johnson was a secretary for Tech High School Social Service many years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of Quincy Chapter of Eastern Star.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, with calling from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Survivors husband William S.

George Dzurovcin George Dzurovcin, 96, Speedway, died Tuesday in Methodist Hospital. Mr. Dzurovcin was a roofer for Globe Roofing, Whiting, 20 years, retiring in 1970. Services will be at 11:30 a.m.

Betty J. Slone Betty J. Wirey Slone, 58, Indianapolis, died Tuesday in Community Hospital South. Mrs. Slone was a substitute teacher and tutor for Indianapolis Public Schools 10 years, retiring in 1978.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in G. H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, with calling from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Joyce, 75, Indianapolis, formerly of Kokomo, died today in St. Vincent Carmel Hospital. Mr. Joyce was a claims attorney for various insurance companies and was a private practice attorney. He retired in 1989.

He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church and the Indiana and Indianapolis bar associations. He was a graduate of Indiana University Law School. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent's Hospice.

Survivors wife Overleda Payne Sharp; son Frank Sharp brother Chester Sharp. RaSph W. Chandler 1918-1991 fraternity, appointed him to its Hall of Fame in 1985. He had served on the "500" Festival Committee's first band selection committee. He was named a Kentucky Colonel in 1964.

Mr. Chandler was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and was its first organist. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

She had worked for the former Kingan Co. and the former Hygrade Food Products Corp. at Indianapolis. She retired from Hygrade in 1964. She was a member of the Brazil Christian Church and Re-bakah Lodge.

The truck driver was -not identified. He was not In another accident today, a Kentucky man was killed In a fiery crash on 1-64 in Harrison County. State police said TERRYT JONES, 30, Russellville, was eastbound about 1 a.m. when his semi-trailer rig ran into the median and struck -a guardrail. The rig skidded 380 feet, flipped onto its top and burst into flames.

A Noble County woman was killed Monday when the motorcycle she was riding crashed into a ditch near Milford. KIMBERLY HICKS, 1 8, Cromwell, died after the accident just before midnight Monday. Hicks was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by Paul Glenn Napier, 19. Cromwell. Hicks was being chased by Milford police for a traffic violation when he crashed on a bridge two miles east of Milford.

Both occupants were thrown from the cycle, which landed "in a drainage ditch. Napier suffered minor injuries and was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital. Officers were unable to finci' Hicks immediately after the accident. After a search, her body was found about 11:30 a.m: Tuesday. Fire probers look at barbecue pit OAKLAND, Calif.

(AP) Investigators said sparks from crude barbecue pit may have Ignited the grass fire that rekindled into the deadly Oakland blaze. State Fire Marshal James F4 McMullen said Tuesday the pit was found at a construction site where investigators believe the blaze broke out. ROME Mario Scelba, 90, a former prime minister and a founder of Italy's dominant political party, the Christian Democrats, died Tuesday of thrombosis. Ward G. Keyes LEBANON, Ind. Services for Ward G. Keyes, 90, will be at 10:30 a.m.

Friday in Russell Hitch Funeral Home, Thorntown, with calling from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Keyes died Tuesday. He had been a farmer in Boone County.
