B-10 THE INDIANAPOLIS NEW Wednesday, March 3, 1993 MARION COUNTY Albert Satin crested vaccine The Associated Press WASHINGTON Medical pioneer Albert Sabin, who developed the oral vaccine that helped end the polio epidemic in the United States, died today. He was 86- He died early this morning at Georgetown University Medical Center of congestive heart failure, his daughter Amy Home of Palo Alto, said from his home in the nation's capital. "He enriched my life and I think he enriched the lives of many people," said Heloisa Sabin, his wife of 20 She said her husband had "many health problems." The oral vaccine that Sabin developed, along with one found earlier by Dr. Jonas Salk, helped eliminate from this country one of the most frightening of diseases. Polio, also known as infantile paralysis, swept the United States as a summer epidemic for many years.

It affected mainly children but some M. Margaret Greer Services for M. Margaret McClure Greer, 65, Beech Grove, will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Little Sons Funeral Home, Beech Grove, with calling from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Greer, who died Tuesday in St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove, was a saleswoman three years at Beads Department Store, Beech Grove, retiring in 1982. She was a member of Southwood Baptist Church, Beech Grove, and Beech Grove Eastern Star. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Noverta Simmons Services for the Rev. Noverta T. Simmons, 80, Indianapolis, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, New Albany, Miss.

Calling will be until 9 tonight in Williams Bluitt Funeral Home. Rev. Simmons, who died Monday in Miller's Merry Manor, was a janitor three years at the Murat Shrine, retiring in 1978.. Previously he had been a janitor five years for 7-Up Bottling Co. He was associate minister of Good Hope Baptist Church.

Lewis 72, formerly of Columbus and Indianapolis, will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Conkle Speedway Funeral Home with calling from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Lewis, who died Monday at his home, worked in sales at Allison Transmission Division of General Motors, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church, American Legion Post 500 and Greenwood Moose Lodge 2079. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. Lewis mother Emma Conners; four grandchildren. rido co-fcKdcr Rebecca Anne Beasley, 50, Indianapolis, co-founder of Dial-A-Ride, a not-for-profit corporation that provides transportation for the elderly and handicapped, died Monday at her home. Memorial services are pending. There will be no calling. Flanner Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Ms. Beasley was a paraplegic as a result of a 1968 airplane crash. She was treated at Crossroads Rehabilitation Center and won the Silver Chalice award for patients who show courage in overcoming their disabilities. She received bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana University. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Paraplegic Foundation.

Bechert; 13 grandchildren. 5 times adults were its victims. One of them was President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was crippled in mid-life by the disease. In 1952, there were 21,269 cases reported in the United States; 10 years later, after the introduction of the Salk and the Sabin vaccines, omy 893 cases were reported.

The Salk vaccine, found in the early 1950s, used a killed virus and required three injections over an eight-month period. The Sabin vac-. cine used weakened forms of live virus and was simpler to administer; it was given by mouth. The vaccines made polio a fear of the past except in less developed nations where vaccination is less than universal. in the course of a long career, Sabin published more than 300 scientific papers and was given more than 78 awards and honors.

He developed vaccines against other virus diseases, including encephalitis and dengue and investigated possible links between viruses and some forms of cancers. Ryan D. Paul E. Merriman PLAINFIELD, Ind. Paul E. Merriman, 59, died Tuesday at his winter home in North Fort Myers, Fla. Mr.

Merriman was the owner of the Ashley Motel and Restaurant 19 years and was also an self-employed accountant 30 years. He was a member of Oriental Masonic Lodge and Murat snrine at inoianapons, Elks Lodge 1288 and Wyoming Antelope Hunters Association. Jean M. Miceli Jean M. Ambs Miceli, 72, Indianapolis, died Tuesday in Methodist Hospital.

Mrs. Miceli worked at Miceli's Produce in the City Market 20 years. She was a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Services will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Daniel F. O'Ri-ley Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in the church. Calling will be from 2 to 9 p.m.

Miceli; daughter Mary Antoinette Knapp; brothers Jack, Michael Ambs; sisters Helen Standiford, Mar garet Bakkas, Ceiles Maraso; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Ralph E. Zimmerman Ralph E. Zimmerman, 84, Indianapolis, died Tuesday in St. Vincent Hospital.

Mr. Zimmerman worked for Wabco 40 years, retiring as a manufacturing supervisor in 1974. He was a member of North United Methodist Church, Centre Masonic Lodge, Downtown Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite and Riviera Club. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Indiana Masonic Home, Franklin. Services will be at noon Friday in Flanner Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary, with calling from 11 a.m.

Dorothy Rairden Dorothy Dye Rairden, 67, Indianapolis, died Tuesday in Brownsburg Healthcare Center. Mrs. Rairden was a beautician for Charm Glo Beauty Shop from 1967 to 1972. Previously, she worked at the Belmont Beauty Shop from 1960 to 1967. She was a member of Capitol City Baptist Church and Women of the Moose.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in, G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, with calling from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Park Cemetery.

She was the widow of Roy A. Rairden. Survivors son Carl Howard; stepsons James, Roy J. Rairden; stepdaughter Shirley Ann Mason; three grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren. Margaret E.

Doster McCORDSVILLE, Ind. Services for Margaret E. Rauch Petersen Doster, 85, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Hendryx Mortuaries, New Palestine Chapel, with calling from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Doster, who died Tuesday in Hancock County Hospital, Greenfield, was a licensed practical nurse many years. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association or Lutheran Family and Child Services. She was the widow of John M. Peterson and Frank Doster.
