THE INDI AXAPOLTS STAR TUESDAY MARCH1911 GARY Ind March 13 (Special) earing a repetition ot the Pleasant Prairie powder mill disaster at the mills ot the Aetna Powder Company two miles east of Gary the Board of Public Works today took preliminary action toward ousting the company or securing a re duction in its output of explosives The Aetna mills which are operated a Chicago company lie in the town Aetna adjoining the Gary and within sight the United States Dynamite guncotton are made In large quantities but very little Is ever kept on hand the product being shipped out as fast as it is made ACT UNDER LAWS The laws of Indiana regarding explo sives are more stringent than those of either Illinois or Wisconsin and they permit the authorities of an adjoining city to institute ouster proceedings against powder mills if it can be shown in the courts that they are a ntiisance In the whole thirty years of existence the Aetna mills have been singularly free from disastrous accidents the company having the record of having the best con ducted mill in thtcountry and this may aid the company in the court fight that is to follow Notice was served on the company to day to cease the manufacture of explo sives at once under penalty of legal ac tion but it is probable that this notice will be disregarded since it comes from the Gary authorities In order to become more familiar with the powder mill situation members of the Board of Public Works will go to Kenosha Wednesday to inspect the ruins of the Pleasant Prairie mills This visit will serve to regulate future actioft on the part of the city against the Aetna mills SUBMITS PLANS OR HOMES and the food is finer more tasty cleanly and wholesome than the ready made found at the shop or grocery Steel Corporation Will Build 142 Houses for Gary Employes GARY Ind March 13 The American Bridge Company of the United States Steel Corporation today submitted plans and specifications to local contractors ask ing for blds on 142 new houses which are to be erected at an estimated cost of $750000 Besides these houses the com pany will erect twenty eight more with its own force and it has already under way thirty more houses' These homes are to be for the employes ot the Gary plant the first unit of which is practi cally completed Steel will be fabricated within a short time and several hundred skilled operatives will come from Penn sylvania to operate The mills It is esti mated that these men with their families will increase the population by at least 3000 In submitting the bids the company stipulated that all of the work
